What to Do With the Lab Reports Your Diagnostic Chain Emails You

Every major Indian diagnostic chain now emails PDF reports directly. Metropolis, SRL, Dr Lal, Thyrocare, Apollo Diagnostics — the report lands in the customer's email within 24 hours of the sample being processed. And then, in most cases, it sits in the email inbox forever, unread except for the initial glance, unfindable a year later when a doctor asks about it. Turning the email into a record entry is a 60-second habit that changes what the report is worth.

The two-minute filing routine

For every lab email you receive:

  • Open the email.
  • Download the PDF.
  • Upload to your health record app, tagged to the right family member.
  • Add the date, lab name, and reason for the test (if not obvious from the report).

  • Delete the email or file it, so the inbox does not become a backup record.

  • The extraction is not perfect. Verify at least the flagged and clinically important values.
  • Some tests are complex (imaging reports, cytology, molecular tests) — the free-text is often what matters, not the extracted numeric values.
  • Anything unclear in the extraction should be checked against the source PDF.

The habit of the same-day scan for paper reports

Some tests still produce paper reports at the point of collection — smaller labs, certain government facilities, some specialist tests. For these:

  • Photograph the report the day you receive it.
  • Upload to the health record app immediately.
  • Keep the paper for 6 months as backup, then it can be discarded.

Paper reports that sit in a folder for months and then are 'filed properly later' rarely make it.

The consolidation view across labs

Once every lab report is in the record — from every lab, over the years — the trend view for any specific test becomes possible. This is where the record earns its place versus the email inbox:

  • Every HbA1c over 5 years on one graph.
  • Every lipid profile visible in one chronological list.
  • Every thyroid result across two different labs and three doctors.

This is the specific value a doctor uses at the next visit. Without consolidation, the visit is 'what has your HbA1c been'; with it, the answer is 'here is the last five years, is there anything you want to see in detail?'.
